Who is the artist behind Laughing Squirrel?

Erika Suckow is a Colorado-based mixed-media artist creating contemporary landscape works inspired by the natural world. A Colorado native, her connection to the land influences both her subject matter and her use of color.  Her process begins with watercolor backgrounds, followed by hand-drawn pen details. Leaves and flowers are individually drawn, cut, and assembled into the foreground, adding texture, depth, and dimension to each piece. Through layered forms and vibrant color, her work reflects an impression of place rather than a literal landscape.  Erika’s mission is to capture the beauty of the natural land while highlighting its colors and quiet energy, creating work that invites connection, reflection, and a sense of belonging.

The name "Laughing Squirrel" is a special part of her story. It came from a mother-daughter workshop, led by Native American women that her mom took her to when she was young.  As part of the Native American Tradition, they gifted each other names—names that reflected how they saw one another.  Erika's mom chose “Laughing Squirrel”, a nod to her childhood spirit: busy, wild, energetic, and endlessly silly. The name stuck and still perfectly captures the playful energy she tries to bring to both her art and life.

Through Laughing Squirrel,  she hope to share pieces that feel alive—full of light, color, and a touch of wonder.
